Dell 2000FP owners - come on in

I've had this monitor since June. In the last month or so, I get this high pitched whining noise when I turn it on. It goes away after about a minute. This is if I left the monitor off for a long time, like overnight. It goes away even sooner if I had recently turned the monitor off.

Anyone else experience this? I'm comtemplating getting a replacement from Dell if no one else has this problem.

Hey lupohki:

I get a whine when I run the "Readability" test in the Nokia monitor test suite (ntest). Other than that, I don't usually have much of a whine... If you decide to get a replacement good luck with that and let me know how the process goes. I've had mixed experiences with getting a replacement with mine when I needed to.

I don't get any noise for either of mine. I work with the lead engineer on it and I can ask him about it if you can give more details on it. (how loud, how frequent, etc.)

I've had this particular one since September, but I've owned the Dell 2000FP since April and went through a few exchanges due to a severe number of bad pixels, etc.

My 2000fp whines if the brightness is set too low... You should try and change the brightness; I think it needs to be above 70 or so. See if that doesn't help!

It happens everytime I turn it off for an extended period of time and turn it back on. Noise level wise, it's comparable to a hard drive whine. I guess it's a 'warming up' noise?

I do have my brightness set on 18 ... I'll try setting it to 70 and see if I wake up tomorrow morning if I still get the noise. Thanks for the suggestion.

haha, well setting the brightness higher seemed to have fixed the whining so I guess I don't have to send it to you.

I did a factory reset last night which set the brightness back to 90, and just now I turned it on and no more whining!

What is the response reate on this monitor? How does it compare to the 19". Are these really Planar monitors?

Response rate is listed at 25ms. If you're referring to the 1900FP, this monitor has MUCH less ghosting and my eyes have actually gotten used to it over time to the point where I don't even notice the ghosting anymore. The original manufacturer is Acer.

This whole brightness thing is very very curious. I wonder why that happens?

Humming most likely has something to do with the frequency that the backlights' ballast operates at during different brightness levels. If the monitor is humming, it means that something is vibrating at a critical frequency, and this is most-likely the ballast. Depending on the brightness level of the lamps, a varying level of current passes through the ballast which causes vibration, sometimes also causing a hum at certain frequencies, regardless how securely it is attached.

Just curious...how is this monitor for gaming?
From what I've seen briely at a LAN party, the monitor has no ghosting and does exceptionally well with games...

Looking to pick one up and wondering what actual owners thought...

I have the 1900FP and I love it. Yea.. ghosting is noticable, but you do get used to it.

Thanks for the feedback....but isn't the 1900FP a re-badged Samsung whereas the 2000FP is a re-badged Acer?

If so, that's comparing apples to oranges.....From what I've heard, the 2000FP has NO ghosting....a fact I'd like verified by those who are actually gaming on these monitors...

I really like my 2000fp. I like it so much, I may buy another for a second display, or for my father so he won't get as many headaches while working in matlab...

About gaming: I personally have not noticed any ghosting on fast-paced games such as UT2k3, NOLF2, NWN, even compared to my previoius monitor, a viewsonic pf815. Movies are fine, and the colors are great (even blacks and dark colors). I'm sure there are people who would disagree, but I believe this is the best computer-related upgrade I've given myself in about 5 years.

I'm not sure how the analog input affects quality, I haven't tried it, because I thought it usesless when using a both a digital input (video card) and digital output (display).

Plus, Dell is (was?) having a sale on monitors and the 2000fp is $400 off, plus free shipping.

I had a problem with a Dell 2000FP and Dell shipped a replacement that worked just fine. But before I sent the first unit back I swaped out the DVI cable and the problem went away. So I had a bad cable from Dell. Since that time I've purchased 2 more 2000FP's and the bad cable problem was repeated. The cables that come with unit, at least the DVI cables, do not seem to match the quality of the display. The cable I've replaced the original with was a QVS brand. I chose that only because it was available locally. The problem I had exhibited itself as 'dancing pixels' or flicking pixels and seemed to be a function of the color of the image being displayed.

I own 3 of these displays and I'm very pleased with their performance once I replaced the DVI cables.

I just switched over to DVI recently (finally got a DVI-capable card) and I'm noticing this dancing flickers as well, especially when I move over certain buttons or colors on a website. Did all Dell cables fail you or just certain ones?

I've been having problems with my 2000FP for a while now, and Dell's support numbers aren't exactly helpful. I'm getting a single pixel-wide yellow vertical line running straight down the center of the monitor. It doesn't always exist - sometimes, it goes away for a while, but it invariably comes back. It shows up during self test, bios, safe mode, you name it.

I'm pretty sure it's a flaw in the LCD itself, but wanted to check with the experts and see what y'all had to say about it. It's a damn shame, because this is easily the most attractive monitor I've ever had.

I've never experienced that. Try a factory reset of the settings if you've changed them.
