Dell 20 inch LCD and gaming...

Would like to hear from people who own one and active in gaming. I'm a little concerned about spending over $750 only to not play any games due to ghosting etc. I guess the ultimate test would be Unreal Tourn 2k due to it's craziness.
 
The best price/performance LCD for gaming at 20" is the Dell 2001FP. They currently run $999.00, but if you can catch a 25% off peripherals, then it is only $750.00. Plus you usually can stack coupons with that, so you may even get it for $30.00 less or $720.00. You can read reviews here, here, and here. For all the research that I have done, this seems to be the best if you can get it on sale.

im also thinking of getting this monitor. seeing as ive had my CTX VL700 for 7 or so years now. with my X800XTPE coming shortly. i wont see a difference between this card and the Pro in most games until the mighty 16*12. my concern is this, would it last as long as my CRT has? i never thought about it before but ive had this monitor since i had a P233. to me my barton isnt showing any age as of yet. so for the next year or so ill wait out the PEG/939/915/925 launches and all that glorious new hardware.

and the added real eastate on my desk would be nice.

i have a 2001FP and it looks awesome!

Maximum PC also reveiwed it an stated it was one of the best LCD's for gaming.

wait...I just read this line off of one of the reviews...

"Generates alot of heat!"

Is this true? Cause if it is, then I have no reason to upgrade. One of the main reasons I want to get rid of my Viewsonic P95F+B is because of the heat it creates, especially during the summer. I didn't realize that LCDs can generate the same amount of heat as CRT. Now I'm not sure if I want to spend $750 on something that will still create enough heat that my room will feel like suana.
 
I was searching at the Dell site about the 2001FP and a few other LCDs at other sites. (I'm not buying one yet, just look around at info and specs.) I noticed for the Dell model it does put out 90watts. I dont know what other montiors usually run at, though my 21" Sony CRT does 145watts or so if I recall.


A Samsung 20.1 I looked at was at 75 watts, but it goes for $1,200!!!

I would like to know what CRTs and LCDs use for power consumption on average per size.
 
Check out the samsung 193p 19 inches It should perform slightly better consume less power and has a lower 1280x1024 native res which is easier on your hardware.
 
A friend of mine has this monitor and loves it. He doesn't recognize the heat. Just remember that it's a 20 Inch monitor. You will have more heat than a 17 (viewsonic V17b) inch one. I have a 17 inch and I can't it's warm unless I touch the back. Nothing that hot at all.

If I didn't already have the investment in the 17 viewsonic I'd buy the Dell 20. 😀

Ditto, but my investment is a 19" Envision lcd, which I love, but sometimes the 25 ms repsonse time doesn't quite keep up.

To be honest tho, I really don't notice ghosting. I believe that the picture on an lcd and it's brightness far outweighs any small downfalls it may have.

As far as heat goes, the heat is generated by the power adapter, which can either be incorporated into the back of the monitor or as a separate box that the monitor plugs into and which in turn plugs into an outlet. I recommend having the adapter separate (it can be placed farther away on the desk to reduce heat problems).

I'm still considering buying that dell for my new rig this winter tho...just imagine dually lcd displays...weeeeeeee!!!

I just assumed that since it won't be as big my Viewsonic P95F+ CRT that it would produce less heat. Guess it was a stupid assumption. If it does indeed still create the same amount of heat as my CRT, then I see no real reason to upgrade.

The lcd uses less power, especially when not in use. Even at max output, it still uses less power than a crt, and thus generates less heat. At idle, it prob only uses about 15W, which really shouldn't produce much heat at all. Not to mention your desk space will open up and allow for better ventilation of any heat produced.

However, heat alone is prob not a great reason to spend triple the money on an lcd. If it's desk space, portability and image quality your looking for, THEN go buy an lcd.
 
How about gaming AND Movies/TV? Does watching movies and/or TV at say a 35 degree angle make a big difference? No money right now but always researching what I am going to replace my 19 inch crt with.
 
I have the 2000FP. It has a native resolution of 1600x1200. Make sure you have the horsepower under the hood to run at the highest resolutions. Mine DOES NOT scale well.
 
I have a young punk who works for me; he's single with money to burn so he buys all the best toys. HE has a 9800xt with the 2001FP, and good Lord that thing is amazing looking. Max res, all the eye candy on Far Cry, and zero IQ, refresh, or tearing problems. If i could save $750 i'd buy one in a heartbeat
