Dell 1920x1200 just got bigger

Holy sh!t only $1550 CND for the 30" 😀

That's actually tempting...

Somehow i don't think my X1900 XT would do so well with games @ 2560x1600...


That 27" is a joke though...big whoop for a blown up 24".

This 27" 1920x1200 = Pixel Density: 7030 pixels / sq. in.
24" 1920x1200 = Pixel Density: 8900 pixels / sq. in.
20" 1600x1200 = Pixel Density: 9989 pixels / sq. in. :heart: (have two of these)
17" 5:4 1280x1024 = Pixel Density: 9300 pixels / sq. in.
19" 5:4 1280x1024 = Pixel Density: 7440 pixels / sq. in.
102" 16:9 1280x720 = Pixel Density: 207 pixels / sq. in. :heart: (good for movies 😉 )

So a little worse than a 19" 5:4 at 1280x1024?

I think the size is ideal: 24 is a little too small for me for xbox/movies. 30 has a native res that requires SLi or a 8800GTX to even think about gaming on.

Question about this monitor though: since it has composite inputs, can I hook up a VCR to it and use the VCR as a TV tuner?

The DPI for the 27'' is a little big for PC gaming.. It would be a good solution though for both PC/console gaming.. Otherwise with that money if you target only for console you might as well take a LCD TV with more inches and keep your monitor..The sad thingwith the 30'' monitors is the lack of component outputs.. Right now you cannot connect a 30'' 2560x1600 monitor to your console and that's what's keeping me from purchasing one...

I've done that on a 2007FP and it worked.

The only unknown seems that I don't exactly know how it would handle a 4:3 480i source. Would it give you options for stretching / keeping native aspect ratio? The quality of how it can scale 480i to fill its screen would be another question to ask.
 
Unless people do video editing, mad multi-task, I don't know how people can use 24" and up monitors without neck strain😛. Last time I went to a store looking at 22 inchers, they were too much mon for me at regular view distance...

well, I've seen the 37 inch westy in action for gaming (same res) and i thought it looked awesome.

Composite is limited to 480i so you'd be screwed even if you could tune in the station.
 
If it was more priced inline with what it should be at like 1200 CAN or so. Well at least it's available for purchase in Canada. 🙂

Dunno m8.. I don't wanna question your preferences.. I'm thinking that a 27'' might be ok @1920x1200 with AA..Well AA can never replace a higher resolution but it's at least a big help.. But a 37'' for PC gaming? Many have reported that they are more than pleased with the Westy but.. Dunno I think it's overkill for my taste{huge DPI is always more apparent in PC gaming).. It would be an awesome monitor for a console though..

It's all about how far away you are from it. I think it would be dumb to get it and use it like a regular monitor at 1-2 feet away from your face, but a bigger screen mainly gets you the ability to have it farther back and thus have more people get a good view of it (which you've touched on with console gaming).
 
Well at least part of the reason why this monitor is more expensive is that it uses LED backlighting instead of CCFLs like other LCDs.

I'm not sure what panel its using, but for all we know this might be some super panel (think NEC 20wmgx2). Granted Dell's recent LCD reputation isn't very good. Maybe xtknight or one of the other people can give us more information.

Also keep in mind that it has just been released, I don't think I need to point out how Dell's other monitors have changed pretty drastically in price (the 30" hasn't even been out a year and its already getting close to being 50% of the original price).

Personally I wouldn't mind a 30" 1920x1200 monitor. If they slotted the prices like this: 24"-$599, 27"-799, 19x12 30"-$999, 30"-$1199 I think they would be pretty reasonable. Of course make them all LED backlit as well.

How do you know its using LED's? And wouldn't it snag a much higher contrast ratio in that case?

 
Ah, just checked it out, I was mistaken, it isn't using LED backlighting, but rather "Dell TrueColor Wide Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lighting" whatever that is exactly, but its supposed to be up to 92% of the NTSC color space, which I believe most LCDs are at about 70-80%

I've been looking at this monitor...$1399 is too high of a price though. I think $950-1000 is about as much as I'd spend for one of these.

you could always run 1280x800 without interpolation

In case you hadn't noticed the 3007WFP show up in my sig a couple weeks ago, i did actually get it 😀

While the 3007 does do a very impressive job running the lower resolutions w/o nearly as much distortion as most LCDs tend to, i have since discovered the wonderful world of running lower resolutions (for games) in centered mode 🙂
Then i just have black bars around the unused space, & everything looks flawless.

So yeah, my "crappy" X1900 XT hasn't really been an issue, as i just run games at a bit lower resolution.
