I'm looking to buy a new LCD monitor within the next day or two, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice in choosing between the Dell 1704fpt and the Dell 1905fp. I've been using the same 17" CRT monitor for the past 5 years or so, and I'm really looking forward to this upgrade. I have searched around and realize that most people prefer the 2001fp or 2005fpw, but I simply can't afford either of those. I use my computer for the normal internet, email, office type tasks, as well as a variety of games (Half-Life, Far Cry, UT, and other simulation and not-so-graphic intensive games). I never watch DVD's on my computer, so that's not an issue. I only game a couple of hours a week, so I'm not a really hard-core gamer, but when I do play, I want it to look good. Also, I just recently built a new AMD system with a 6600GT, so I want a monitor that will work well with this...I'd hate to have spent all that money to build the system and have a monitor that wastes it.

I noticed that the response time for the 17" is 12ms, while for the 19" it is 20ms. Is this a significant benifit for gaming? Are there any other major differences between the two monitors? I can get the 17" for $165 less then the 19", which is kind of important for me.

Let me know what you think...is the 1704fpt a good monitor, or is it really worth it to spend the extra $165 to get the 1905fp?

I'd say the 1905FP. LCD++

Just making sure, you are aware that the 2001fp and 2005fpw get under 400 on sale, right? Although those would probably be to much for the 6600gt. I'd get the 1905fp. 19" is way bigger than 17" when you compare them. The 1905fp gets down to 250 during sales.

well the 1704fpt is only $200 right now, while the 1905 is around $350. The 2001fp is about $450, and i couldn't find any deals on the 2005fpw, so that's really expensive.

I am not really interested in a wide screen monitor right now, so I can exclude the 2005fpw. if price were not an issue, am I correct in assuming the 2001fp is the best option?

If i were to buy today, I would probably get the 1704fp based on price...but is it worth it to let this $200 deal expire and wait for better deals on the bigger monitors?

Both panels are 1280 by 1024. Thus, while the 19 inch panel will look bigger, it will do so merely by having bigger pixels and fewer pixels per inch. If your eyes don't do very fine detail particularly well, you might want to consider it. Otherwise, though, the 17 inch is a much better buy. Same number of pixels, rather less money, and you'll be close enough to the screen that either will fill your center of vision. If the 19 inch offered a genuinely higher resolution, I would urge you to go for it; but it doesn't.
