dell 1525 battery won't charge

my girlfriend has a dell 1525 a few months ago she broke her original charge, got a non dell replacement. intermittently it wouldn't charge the battery. recently it stopped charging in completely. figured it was just a bad adapter so I got her an oem dell one. and it still refuses to charge the battery. I've read online this isn't that uncommon of a problem but I was unable to find any workarounds. the laptop is out of warranty so going to dell isn't a good option.
