Delgado wont be a Met...and I don't want him on the team either. The Mets will go for a cheaper, defensive minded first baseman to complement the young infield ala Olerud, Travis Lee, Doug Minky..etc. Delgado will probably go to either Baltimore or Florida.

yeah i would be surprised if he came to the mets and would be happy...they would have a crazy lineup then

oh and some stats that espn showed last night showed that Beltran has about the same career stats that Bonilla did when the Mets made him the highest paid player at the time...[mrdingledangle lets out a slight whimper]

..Bonilla proved to be a total jerk and I'm sure he enjoyed playing cards with Rickey during the playoffs.

I want it to happen so that I can just put him on the Mets in ESPN MLB 2k5 already... Victor Diaz is hitting .216.

Having watched Delgado for the past half decade, he's actually one of the better defensive first basemen in MLB. Nearly Johnny O(who I also watched lots) good. And the really goofy thing is Delgado was voted the Best Player in Baseball by the AP or someone like that, which I totally disagree with, but he was. So he's obviously a highly sought player by whatever teams can afford his ridiculous contract. I think he's overrated, but some don't I guess.
I wouldn't complain if you're a Mets fan, 45-50HRs and solid defense along with being an excellent clubhouse guy aren't easy to find anymore, as easy as it sounds.

I wouldn't complain if the Mets got him but the team has other issues like a totally empty bullpen. They will end up hoping that the guys they got now along with the kids in the minors can step up. DeJean, Heredia and Looper? Thats it?? They need more..though not like there is anything else out there.

I was watching Yankees Hot Stove Report on YES Network and one of folks there mentioned how Delgado like the "finer" things in life like great restaurants, museums..etc.. guess NYC would be a good place if he wants to pursue his usual stuff. I honestly don't know much about his defensive capabilities since I watch more NL games and only see Delgado when the Jays play the Yanks. The Mets infield is young and I hope someone with good defense who can instill some confidence in the infielders is signed. The last good first baseman the Mets had was John Olerud and he left after 1999.

That's true, I know nothing really about the Mets pitching situation. So I guess if he's taking up salary that could be used for pitching that's not great for the team. I'm just saying for the money he'll probably get paid, you could do a lot worse. He's no Mo, Bobby, etc. ;)
I'd much rather have two or three pitchers than one first baseman as well, any day.

The Mets are set with their starting pitching, the pitching help that they desperately need is the middle relief bridge to their closer.

I heard the Florida Marlins just offered a 3 year/$35 million contract to Delgado, which is $5 million higher that what the O's were offering. Regardless, I have also heard the Ranger's are still in the lead for Delgado's services (which doesn't make much sense to me because they have Texeira).

according to ESPN the Rangers expect Delgado to sign with the Mets, saying the rangers cant afford him without trading soriano

and the orioles and marlins have offered contracts, but delgado's agent is sending counteroffers that are a couple more million a year

What gets to me about Reyes is that he tears it up at the Winter Leagues but then he comes to NY and an injury occurs...i swear there is something in the water at Shea. There is too much potential in Reyes to give him up even after everything that has happened. The Mets handled Reyes poorly anyways..never sending him to the best specialists to take care of his issues and sending him to some nut last season that taught him that silly looking running style he had..ugh. I think they finally sent him to a new person and he is ripping it up in the Dominican.

The Beltran press conference went nicely... I hope the Randy Johnson conference starts with him growling at all the cameramen or something. GRRRWWWLL.. DON'T TAKE MY PICTURE!!!

For the sake of their fans, I hope the Mets win something this year. It is heart breaking to listen to the poor bastords on the local sports talk radio shows.

Bitching and moaning about the Mets on WFAN is good relief for us Mets fans. They should be a better team in 2005..playoff material?? Not quite but they should be a marked improvement over the past couple of years and at least they should be fun and will bring some excitement to Shea.

I'm a Mets fan but unfortunately... Mets will have to pay a lot of money due to luxury taxes just like Yankees. :frown:

Not necessarily. I read something about the cap before luxary tax payments is $129 million right?? Mets are under that unless they sign Delgado. I still rather have Olerud for defensive purposes..the infield is young and I want a capable glove at first. No more of this Vaughn, Piazza, Phillips..etc disaster like the past couple of years. Then again Delgado could be good defensively at first..i really dont know.

What's the Mets payroll after signing Beltran? Where did the Mets get all this money to sign all these free agents? From my recollection, the only big contract that they lost after the season's end was Mo Vaughn's contract. They signed Benson, Martinez, Beltran, and now they're after Delgado?! The Mets still have Glavine, Floyd, and Piazza, the other big money contracts, still under payroll. I'm amazed ... but this should help the Mets immensely.

The 2004 payroll was around 80 million which was much less than the 100 million 2003 payroll. Of course having the Vaughn contract out of the way also helps. They also lowered payroll after Franco was released, no more Al Lieter, Mike Stanton left..etc. Piazza's contract is done after the season so I'm sure they are keeping that in mind. Also the new Mets network is coming so they also will have money from the Mets relationship with Comcast and Time Warner. $$

Yet, I still don't think they can overcome the Braves. It'll be an exciting season, that's all I know. If they sign Delgado, they're going to start looking like the Yankees.

You can never count out the Braves..until some other team finishes first the Braves should always be the favorite in the NL East.

As for looking like the Yanks due to payroll and getting stars...yea..I can see that. Evil Empire 2? I hope not.. I just want a fun, exciting season that ends on a positive not (ie: NL East champs or wildcard).
