Deleting your own posts

You know, all of us occasionally double post - Click the "post" button twice instead of just once or something equally stupid.

I've always wondered - You can edit your own posts, but you can't delete them. Why not? Seems like a logical thing to be able to do. Might even want to extend it so you can delete your own threads on the condition that there aren't any other posts in it besides your own.

Because I would nef REALLY late at night to up my postcount, then delete everything before the mods caught me. 🙂

Perhaps they could have it so if you deleted a double post, your post count would be modified as well.

I think the primary concern is that someone could post (for example, in FSFT), troll someone, and then delete the evidence. This issue could be solved by only allowing the deletion of posts with no replies, but I'm sure there are other issues that we haven't thought of.

Exactly. I actually really hate it when other forums allow users to delete their own posts. You lose all means of public accountibility.

If they decided to do that, they'd obviously program it to subtract 1 post from your count when you delete your post 😀

When some people have a postcount of 45,000+ it makes you wonder if its already happening. 😉

Thats the big one IMO, protection on the FS/FT forum....

you can't delete now but you can go back and blank your post, how is this so different?

Perhaps the deleted post could be moved to a 'Recycle bin' of sorts. Users must provide a reason for the deletion. If the reason is acceptable, it's purged permanently. If it's not, it can either stay there for two weeks or so in case the content of it is needed, or be put back in the thread.

Also the ability to delete posts should be disabled if there is already another reply in the thread after yours.

It's not just FS/FT protection - it's also the insane amount of trolling that would occur with people telling everyone to F--- off and then deleting the post. You can't just have the ability to delete your post on a forum of this size.

I've always wonder about that too. IMHO, within the user-visible thread structure, only the "current" post should be visible, but all prior edits should also be visible, in a historically-ordered linked-list, to the mods/admins. That way, nothing could be covered-up or hidden.

When StorageReview had the "great crash" a long time ago, when they re-built their forums, they removed any ability to delete or edit posts. I tend to strongly agree with that decision. There isn't a lot of after-the-fact hiding here on AT (although there is some), but on other forums, it's really, really bad.
