Deleting XP partition on MBP

I have a 2011 MBP version 10.6.8. I loaded Windows XP on it but couldn't get it to update properly. It worked but it keeps on having errors. I got sick of trying to load it so I deleted the partition.
I don't own Windows 7 and am not interested in buying it. I have a simple program I need to use on the laptop that only runs in Windows. Damn.
Now it starts in the deleted Windows partition unless I use the Option key. Then I have to click on the Mac HDD icon. WTF??
I assumed deleting this partition would take it back to the original start up.
How do I get it to work as it did before?
I hope someone out there can help me.🙁

System Preferences > Start Up Disk (this is from within OS X)

Go into Disk Utility to make sure that the partition is both gone, and re-integrated back into the OS X one.

Install XP in a VM, if you only need it for a simple program.
