Ok, what if in either win2k or win98 i run the win2k install and tell it to install a new copy of win2k, will it overwrite the last win2k i installed or basically create a 3rd operating system?

if you run the win2k cd from within windows you will overwrite one of the existing OSs there. you cant do a clean install of win2k on the same partition without booting the cd i believe. use some partitioning program to create a partition and move your stuff over there and just format the whole sucker.

hmm
So what your saying is, if I tell it to install a copy of win2k (not upgrade win98) on my C drive, where there is allready a copy of win2k, the new win2k will overright the old win2k?

yeah i believe thats what itll do. ive never had both OSs on the same partition but it shouldnt matter. it wont be a clean install tho. all your program files folders will still be there. i suggest uninstalling everything before you reinstall 2k. then when you come back into 2k...remove all your folders in the program files folder except what 2k needs...theres accessories and common files and few others i think.

If you boot from the Windows 2000 CD, it will ask if you would like to upgrade or new install of Windows 2000. Selecting new installation will give you the extra copy while selecting upgrading will overwrite the existing installation.

Be careful when you partition. Try to back up everything you can before re-partitioning your hd. In your re-partitioning, you will be asked to make an extended partition and then logical drives, since you only have 1 primary partition now.
I believe if you use FDISK, you may loose all your existing data.
Don't know for sure but this is why others may direct you to other software to make this partition.

After you create (recommend making 2 partitions, one for your operating system(w2k) being 2.0 or 2.5G size and the other to take up the rest of your drive space. You will have to go into windows and format the new partitions (fat32).
Then use your W2k disk to install W2K to your new drive (D:).
You will automatically have a dual boot choice when you boot up.
Reinstall your applications to the same location they were previously if you like.

Ok, this may sound stupid...probobly becuase it is...but could i just be lazy and keep win2k where it is? And the thing is...dont ask why... I just want to overwright my current win2k. If im in win2k, and i tell it to upgrade will it overwrite win2k, or upgrade win98?..and what if i tell it to install a fresh copy?

thanks

if you tell it to do a fresh copy you should be able to choose where you want to install it. you can choose the same directory as the old win2k and install over it.

thank you!
Well...i used a link that was in a thread much like mine... Basically it said use a boot disk and reinstall the system files, it then never asked for 2k, then just del the 2k folder and some other files. HOWEVER, now when i do to install 2k, it gives me this error after i say ok to the options:
WINNT32 caused an invalid page fault in
module W95UPG.DLL at 015f:02032802.

Sounds like you are experiencing what you should by having these two os's on the same partition.

Did you make back ups of your system files and registries?

If not, you may have to start over again....Save your personal stuff like favorite folders, data files.
You are probably writing info into the existing folders that have corrupt information. By installing into existing folders without deleting them, you are adding info to bad info, making all unuseable.
That is why it was mentioned to do a clean install.

One way to reinstall is to delete the system folders from dos and then reinstall.
If you have a CDRW, be thinking of cloning your os partition after you have it installed so you won't have to do this again.

boot into windows98
go to the command prompt and type sys c:
This will restore the system on your c drive (ntdetect, ntloader, .... aren't used anymore).

Boot into w98, and setup w2000. The installation will give you two options: upgrading your current version (w98) or installing a fresh copy.

Choose for fresh copy and choose the same installation path as your first version of w2000.

this should do the trick!!!

Good luck.
