Deleting message histories in ICQ makes it take up even more space! How do I reduce the megs that ICQ takes up?

ICQ's taking up quite a few megs, and I tried reducing the size by clearing message histories, but that only makes the databases bigger for some reason. When I click on "Delete All" in message history, it asks me if I want to move all messages to "Deleted Items"? How do I access this "deleted Items" so I can clear everything out from there. I figure that's what's causing the database to grow instead of get smaller when I clear message histories.
