Deleting Built-in XP Printer Driver

Windows XP will install a built-in driver for many printers. When one installs an updated printer driver from the printer manufacturer, a printer with the built-in driver stays in the list of installed printers. If one deletes the printer with the built-in driver, XP just redetects and installs that printer again. Is there any way to tell XP to stop redetecting the built-in printer?
