it's usually about 5/10 IBM, 4/10 Maxtor and little bits of anything else.

I personally like IBM and Maxtor both quite well and you can't do badly with either.

IBM for quality and reliability.
Quantum for a good mixture of reliability & performance
Seagate for pure performance
Don't have much experience with recent Maxtors...had an old one that sucked though.
Western Digital is at the bottom of the pile at any rate.

What about Samsung.. there Spinpoint series is right up there (and surpasses) some of them.
They are inexpensive,high quality and very quiet and not too mention fast for 5400 RPM drives.
I have 2 and am very impressed.If you can find a upplier, you won't be dissapointed.
BUT.. for sheer speed,if price is no option,then the IBM 75GXP is the King.
