When I canceled my service I think the number went into a temp pool for a while before going into the normal phone number pool. However, I think calling the old number got the "out of service" message. Not too sure about two numbers on the same account though. Voice mail is usually tied to the phone number though, so if it got canceled I'd imagine voicemail wouldn't play.
 
if your worrying about this,there are other, probably more serious issues that you should be looking at.
