My friend deleted a partition on a 250gb external hd of his.

The drive was one big partition of D:\ (250gb)

Now he goes to access the files which he can see it says "you want to format this drive?"

How cna he fix this

The partition is like a table where the OS looks for to find files, if you delete it, then the OS cannot find the files. You will need a file recovery program to get those files back to be transferred to anothehr drive. Make sure you do not defrag the drive as it will overwrite those files.

You deleted a partition and kept looking for files? Deleting a partition is like deleting the Table of Contents and paging of a book, a very thick book! Go with henry's recommendation of using a file recovery program if you still want your files back.
