Deleted Data not so Deleted?

I deleted some downloads from a directory on one of my hard drives the other day and now it tells me (when I right click and go to properties in the folder) that I still have them there! It says 43 objects at the bottom of the folder but 86 files in the folder properties. Also, it tells me that the amount of space that the files took up on my hard drive is the same as it was before and after the deletion. I know for a fact I deleted those files, but what the hell is going on. The space was never freed!

When you delete files in windows, the files aren't actually deleted, their clusters are just listed as belonging to a file in the "Recycled" folder (recycle bin). To really get rid of them, you have to empty the recycle bin (or just press Shift-Del when you are deleting and they won't go to the recycle bin). Also if you look at the folder where the files were with Explorer just after you delete them, it may not have had time to refresh the folder properties. I use PowerDesk instead of Win Explorer and it has the F5 key as the folder refresh, you may have to look in the View menu to refresh Explorer.

You can refresh Explorer or just about any windows program usually by pressing F5 (works with all IE for sure too).

But as Zepper suggested, make sure you empty your recycle bin or just use shift-delete, or better yet, change the properties to recycle bin to remove files on delete and not to the recycle bin (or just change it to 0% of your drive, which is basically the same thing).
