your friend is correct. for the price of what your new proposed system would cost, it's not a worthwhile upgrade from what you're using now.

and he probably meant core 2 duo. :)
get atleast 1gb of ram. 2gb is preferable if you game.

I think you'd be better off with a 7600GT or something in the 7000 series.

Definitely get at least 1GB RAM since it doesn't cost much nowadays.

The CPU is decent.

the cpu is crap, get C2D e4300 1 GB DDR2 and a Nvidia 7600GT
There is no reason to buy a single core CPU nowadays.

I am getting parts together for a computer I'm building too... then I got thinking should there be a forum specifically for this purpose rather then clogging up the general hardware forum?

as for your computer I would recommend at least a gig of ram, get a video card at least above the 7000 range. and perhaps an X2 CPU, I would also recommend a SATA 3Gb drive too. But if you just want it to be faster than your current computer. I suppose what you have listed should be fine.

and with the way you are buying things I would buy the stuff that can't go obsolete so fast first (like a PSU, case, and maybe hard drive) by the time you save up more money the other components may go down in price.

Right now i am going to keep the current case, psu and HDD, i will sell that stuff off later as i need the internal parts more first. also i dont game much, i only play one game, and that game is flight simulator, so 6800GS should be fine for that task, as i am not a heavy gamer, and most likely i will get 1 GB of ram as 512 pretty much sucks nowadays.

I probably wouldn't bother going with AM2 unless you're planning to buy a better cpu later, go for one of the low end dual core procs (AMD was cheaper than Intel for the lower end dual cores last time I checked, just compare price vs performance before you buy) or a faster proc than 3000+... cheaper to pick up a socket 939 setup on clearance somewhere if there's any left.

I would suggest reading Anand's article on the Core 2 Duo E4300 and build a system based on his test rig. It would offer a huge increase in speed for a minimal cost over your proposed system.

How long should i wait till i should buy new parts, or build a new comp ???i got my sempron when skt A was basically getting obsolete in the way for skt 754, since then 2 more sockets have come out and my comp is still running fine, i just want something that can run fast without any problems, and play games straight at a medium-high FPS rate, especially Flight Sim X

any chance you live near a frys store? they often have core2duo/mobo combos for ~140-180.

intel core 2 duo E4300 or E6300
asus/gigabyte/abit mobo (P965 chipset preferably)
2x512MB of ram, but you can probably get 2x1GB for cheap nowadays
7600GT/7900GT/7950GT or an ati equivalent...you can even wait for the 8600GT/8600GTS next month which is supposed to outperform the 7950GT/7900GS.

done.

i was looking through at sites at video cards, and i looked at the 7600GT, its not much more expensive than the 6800GS so i might as well get that then
would 7600gt with my new setup work well ?

there have been some deals on 7900gs cards for ~110-140. that's probably the budget gamer sweetspot.
