Can't his parents get his current status from the hospital? Can't they just go to the hospital?

I called the hospital and they verified that he was there ( I wanted to make sure it wasn't a horrible prank) so now they transfered me to the officer that was "detaining" him. The hospital told me that he underwent surgery, but they then transfered me to the police officer who told me that he was not allowed to disclose any information until if/when my friend recovers and sees a judge.

Does anyone know how I can find out more information? His mother heard the news and is terrified.

Local news searches (websites)? can I have a lawyer call the hospital? at least to see what condition he is in.
Any advice is appreciated.

Unless your friend is a minor, then even his parents can't get any more detailed info over the phone. Have the parents go to the hospital. Even a lawyer can't get much more info without a signed HIPAA release.

You can't. A lawyer has no more right to information than you do, unless he's going to defend him against criminal charges. Your best bet is probably trying to get in touch with your friend directly.

I hope he's ok!

Have his parents hire a lawyer, while they the lawyer is unlikely to be able to get medical information without his permission, he will likley be able to get to talk to him.

Maybe, maybe not. If he is in legal trouble (going to be charged with something in connection to the shooting) and not arraigned yet, it may be a bit more difficult for them to obtain information.

Shootings are usually criminal cases and thus, result in total lockdowns on that floor of the hospital. No one gets in without explicit permission. Same goes for discussing the case on the phone on top of the HIPAA restrictions.

-He is my best friend.
-I think he is going to be charged with something, but I am not sure. He doesnt seem like the type to be involved in gang activities, but he is kind of a hard ass, If someone were to fight him, he wouldnt back down.

Hopefully that someone was not a police officer.
