I believe the antenna(s) must be mounted inside the screen frame for best reception. You want a diversity antenna so that reception can be optimized from either direction. I imagine you could get away with putting the antenna in the base unit but would likely get poor reception in public areas, and low LAN transfer speeds in your home.
