EDIT: Knew I should've used the search function, sorry.

I have some personal financial and similar files on a laptop I use that I would like to protect if my laptop were to be stolen. I use these files daily so keeping them on a remote or network server is not an option. And with all the data theft articles I see almost daily, I think it's time I find how to better protect my data.

Could somebody recommend some software that could help achieve what I'm looking for?

EDIT: Using WindowsXP Pro

There are also flash memory (USB) drives that have encryption. You get double security - you carry the files with you, and they can be encrypted as well. Example:

lol, does the OP work for wells-fargo mortage? I just get a letter from them about my info being on a stolen laptop.

If he's using Pro couldn't he just use the native OS encryption?

Your are always better off not having the data on the laptop at all - on a thumbdrive on a chain around your neck saves a lot of laughs. :)
