i have a problem. i have been at my friends dad's store trying to remove spyware/adware/trojans/about:blank hijackers. i got rid of all the trojans/viruses in safe mode using ewido fully updated, trojan hunter fully updated, symantec client fully up to date, MS antispyware, adaware, spybot, xoftspy, ad aware away, cws shredder, everything all up to date, and all ran in safe mode to get rid of the stuff, it gets rid of it, but it comes back when i go back into normal windows. this is windows 2000. i want to maybe find out if the problem with the spyware keeps coming back from a registry backup windows/spyware program made and it keeps restoring it back to where all the spyware was in there. is there anyway to remove registry back-ups in windows 2000? or would this just be pointless to do?

You didn't remove it all. If it were me, I'd just burn that Windows installation to the ground, redo it, enable Automatic Updates, install some good antivirus software AND fully configure it, and set up Restricted-User accounts for all the regular users if feasible. Reserve the Administrator account for when Admin powers are actually needed for something, and password-protect it.

If you want to keep fighting it, then try this here in addition to the rest, and also try CCleaner (google).

The only registry backups are in c:\winnt\repair and c:\winnt\repair\regback

You are likely thinking of XP which backs up the registry via system restore points to the c:\system volume information folder. Doesn't apply to 2000. You can delete the regback folder if you want but leave repair intact.

I would guess you aren't really getting everything off.
