you'll see a big jump upgrading the 4200rpm drive. the battery usage of the 7200rpm is more than that of the 5400rpm one, though, so it'll reduce battery life. 5400rpm seems to be the sweet spot when it comes to laptops. if the price difference is small between the 5400rpm and 7200rpm drive, and you're satisfied with your battery life, go for it.

about your gaming, don't expect anything at 1024x768 or higher. you should be able to play at 800x600 decently but i'm no expert on this. i just know that my intel GMA950 (which is much weaker than your card) can play F.E.A.R. on minimum everything and lowest resolution (640x480 or 800x600..i forgot) at decent frames (like 20-30 approximately on average, 10-15 when the stuff is intense). i've never played F.E.A.R. on any other computer but i can truly tell it was not meant to be played on a GMA950.

anyway, my point is you should be able to play your games at least at 800x600 at decent frames.
