have you had any guitar lessons in the past? do you know the chords?
if you want to learn it the proper way, i suggest you start with a classical guitar. a lot of the well-known guitarists (if not all) like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani have classical guitar background. i taught myself how to play classical guitar, and it's easily done. i suggest you start with a classical guitar (which can be purchased for under $100 for a nice used one), and buy a beginner's guide. there's a really good book, but i forget the title. good luck.

Actually, the reason they learned classical guitar wasn't to learn that particular instrument, rather they were being trained to play the guitar classically (ie: proper chord formation and structure etc etc). There's nothing special about the classical guitar that makes it a good place to start, it's the training that goes with it that you benefit from.

<-- learned guitar the non-classical way :)
