3) What service-pack level is your WindowsXP CD-ROM, is it Service Pack 2?

sry i just had my wallet stolen from my car. luck isnt on my side. it has sp2. nothing brought it on that i know of. had 4 tidbits of spyware. but nothing big
 
To do a repair installation, follow Microsoft's instructions on this page (you want Method 2). You were on the right track by booting from the WinXP CD, but you skip the first Repair offer and let it go a bit further.

i did the repair and upon booting it gave me the blue screen page fault in non paged area. i reinstalled windows, now i have two copies on one computer. i have tons of crap on my drive and i would like to get. i havent activated the 2nd copy yet. i clicked on my computer and in the windows folder it has all my files. But i dont want 2 copys of xp on one computer. and i sure as hell dont wanna do all the updates. but hey beggers cant be choosers. yeah wallet thing sux balls. this happened yesterday after i helped this lady by fixing her sons computer. the same day what luck.

how can i repair the original windows if repair gives me blue screen? i rebooted multiple times and it doesnt change.
 
Would this work?

1) use the working copy of Windows to rescue your data files that you need to save*

2) after rescuing your stuff, nuke BOTH Windows installations

3) reinstall Windows from scratch



*rescuing stuff from your old Documents and Settings\<account name> folder will require taking ownership of them, which I can give directions for if you decide to take this approach.
 
I installed 2 copies of xp now. I can see all my files on my harddrive. i dont understand what u mean by take ownership and nuke them both? why not just hold onto the 2nd windows copy i have and delete the 1st windows folder? i would like to click and drag sp2 in the new windows as well.but i dunno how any of this will actually work though
 
If you want to keep the 2nd Windows copy, then sure. If you're not able to get into your files in the Documents and Settings folder, then that's when you'd need to take ownership of them so you could get into them.

If your Windows installation CD has Service Pack 2 on it, then your newer Windows installation will have SP2 already. If it doesn't, you can download the whole SP2 from here and install it: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta...-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en After that, make sure to turn on Automatic Updates, located in Control Panel > Security Center.
 
Thanks for your help. i just said screw it and burned all my info onto 15 cd's and reformated the hd. i was tired of trying to delete windows and transfer files : /
