Can you tell me where you got your information from? Several owners of T41p models that use the same hard drive and active protection are curious if the unusual number of hitachi drive failures in their machines may be related to this same problem. If you have a contact person at IBM could you let us/me know.

Thanks

Thanks for the follow up post regarding the source. T4X models with active protection may also be affected, numerous posts over at thinkpads.com have stated that their T41p hard drives with the hitachi 7200 rpm drive have been mysteriously failing. I own a t41p so until this sorts out I see no reason not to disable the active protection feature. Again

your post makes a lot of sense to people with new T4X notebooks that have HDs fail, particulary since the same Hitachi drive is very popular with other notebook enthusiasts so if the drive quality was an issue I am sure that would have reared its head long ago.

I have a T41p and I am one of those unfortunate ones whose drive failed. I was working on a train when it happened, so I guess due to the vibrations, the active protection feature was just activated when I shut down the computer. So, this info from IBM could explain why it happened.

Funny thing is, here in Germany, absolutely nobody from IBM seems to know about this problem. Moreover, they told me, that this doesn't happen frequently, quite on the contrary, that I am the only case they know of.

Great thing is, though, that they can't find another drive. Seems there isn't one in all of Europe and the one the ordered from the states also failed during testing :( So I am waiting for 2 weeks already, with no end in sight!

HESDog, could you keep us updated, about when the firmware will be out and where do get it? Would be greatly appreciated.
