I am working with a mixed Novell/Microsoft environment. Novell has a neat feature: delete inhibit. Is there some way to accomplish a similar result with special permissions in Micrisoft Server 2003?

"...if you assign the Delete Inhibit attribute to a file, no one, including the owner of the file or the network administrator, can delete the file. But any trustee with the Modify right can change the attribute to allow deletion." (From the Novell Web site)

You can do this through NTFS permissions. You have to click on Advanced and you can remove the delete permissions from all users in there.

But IMO it's worthless anyway because even though you can't delete the file you can still fill it up with garbage.

There is a big difference between malicoiusly filling a file and mistakenly nuking a directory tree (just ask Herb :))

p.s. Sorry, the last part is an inside joke...

I understand the difference and I can see where delete inhibit could help in the purely accidental case, but wouldn't it just be better if MS implemented something like the NetWare "salvage files" stuff?

We suffer from a shortage of user training more than malice. I am afraid that milecel79's suggestion might have too many side effects be practicable.

Why? It does the exact same thing.

Alternatly you could deny delete privilages to a group of users so that administrators can still delete things if they need to.
