Is this our country's idea of a nonpartial, fair, and unbiased judge? Perhaps Delay's attorney will request a change in venue if its possible.

Uh, so I guess DeLay needs a judge that donated to him?
Is that your idea of a nonpartial, fair, and unbiased judge? While you are at it, consult a thesaurus . . . one term will suffice.;)

OMGWTFBASTARD!!!

Seriously, what's the deal? Are judges not allowed to vote and participate in the democratic process?

The only thing that matters is that he executes the duties of his office with seriousness and professionalism. Perhaps that's why Delay's supporters are worried, this is an inconcievable concept?

In what world is listing a person's publicly-available campaign contributions considered "smearing?"

How is it at all relevant?

If the defense believes they won't get a fair trial in his court, they can always move for a change of venue. It's all public record, and you can believe those who back DeLay will be watching the whole thing very closely, so there's no chance the judge can make any ruling that doesn't stand up to public scrutiny.

zendari -- Go back to complaining that the prosecutor's a Democrat. Since he's prosecuted more Democrats than Republicans, that argument doesn't cut it, either.

Better hurry back to worldnetdaliy. I'm sure they'll have some more meaningless flack you can use in yet another lame attempt to muddy the waters around DeLay's trial.

Suppose I say: "Shut up, Hafen. You only have ~1600 posts here."

Was that at all relevant? No.
Is it "smearing" you? No.

Small difference, perhaps, but the cries of "smear campaigning" are just as much of a stretch as the OP's conclusions.

Judges are certainly allowed to engage in the democratic process, so long as such engagement does not impose on their mandate of impartial and fair judicial review.

While this judge may certainly be capable of performing his duty in a professional manner, his contributions do suggest or at least introduces the potential that his political leanings could influence his ability to remain inpartial.

Wow. You know, I just found out that MOST JUDGES VOTE in elections, too. That means MOST JUDGES HOLD POLITICAL AND SOCIAL VIEWS!

And get this: MANY JUDGES PRACTICE RELIGION!!!! AND SOME JUDGES ARE AGNOSTICS OR EVEN ATHEISTS!!!

Holy cow! How can anyone expect a fair trial when it turns out the judges are people just like you and me?

There is a distinction between politically active and blindly partisan...if any judge demonstrates behavior that suggests the latter, they are unsuitable for the bench they sit on.

That this judge donated to John Kerry's campaign is not really of much concern...that he has gone one step further in donating to moveon.org does raise an eyebrow, considering that moveon.org is a notable partisan organization.

So it is ok to make references to Clinton's indiscretions when it suits your own purposes?

Good! We need more Liberal Judges in Texas to bring down the corrupt that other Judges would eagerly just sweep under the rug so long as it covers up the crimes of their GOP brethren. </sarcasm>

An essential component of our judicial system is that the judges make their judgements based on the LAW, not their personal political views. Don't kid yourself, every single judge in the country is going to have personal views that someone disagrees with, so the only fair way to conduct business is to have them seperate their judgement from those views. Are you suggesting donating to a PAC or a political candidate indicates that the judge will not rule fairly on the law? I'm pretty sure we'd have to fire almost the entire judiciary if that was the case, which I certainly don't believe it to be. And I personally don't think a judge that would need to have no political views in order to rule fairly would be worth a whole lot.
