Searched a lot, tried a lot of solutions but I could not get my IDE Maxtor in an external USB enclosure to work without these errors. Finally got a replacement motherboard and figured that the USB ports were defective. They gave trouble with iPods and other USB 2 devices to, although they had the latest USB 2 drivers installed too.

i have a usb2 / fw external but i only use the fw port. any tranfer of about a gb gives me the DW failure and i have tried everything as well. i think it is the prolific (not oxford) chipset in the enclosure.

Thats why, proflic chipsets (the combo ones) are horribly unreliable and sadly, for it to be reliable, you need to simply use the USB2.0 and not the firewire.

My problem was solved by changing the mother board - I think the USB ports were defective.
