Delayed Write Failed OR Hd is 'going' bust?

I get this error message when trying to copy TO the RMA drive that I have gotten:

Windows - Delayed Write Failed

Windows was unable to save all the datsa for the file \device\ HarddiskVolume5\Video\Vike\amazingSave.mpg. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

I have a busted WD 160GB SE drive. I am backing my stuff to my RMA drive that I have gotten.

I am on the last 16Gb to back up or so and now I get this message. I have about used 112Gb of the 149 (formatted capacity). It worked FLAWLESSLY for when I was backing up stuff on to it before. I get this error message now. No big files can be copied. Small files up to abut 80mb or so work. Smaller files totalling 80mb+ don't work. A big single file doesn't work 🙁

I thought it was my OS but when I copy between 2 other drives it works FINE. From other partitions it is also fine. It is only

I have done some research on here and on the net.

-My cable is seated and has worked. Nothing has changed since my HD last worked.
-Going to update the BIOS on my Asus Granite bay deluxe board.
-write enabled cache is shadowed away so I can not select it in the Disk Property.

I think the Hd is dying on me🙁. This is the 2nd time this is happened to me. I've had this error msg before. My HD later then went bad on me.

1st WD 160GB Se drive: RMA due to the error above: Sent away got RMA back:
2nd WD 160GB Se Drive: Above error: Trying to fix with the wisdom of At 🙂

Can transfering lots of data to the drive eventually bust it up so soon?? This is what has happened to this one I think and DEFINATELY my last one. After taking that drive out of pc, pc ran 'fine'.

My system was fine before. I had transfered about 112Gb to it and now it is going crazy on me 🙁.

I am reallygetting tired of my problems with WD. If AT can offer help (usually does!) I'll see if I can fix it. If not I'll RMA the the 1st 160Gb drive away. Already have the drive they sent to me as I'm backing to it. Then RMA the 2nd drive and wait for the 3rd drive to back to it.

IF I get any problems with my 3rd drive I'm going to not get another WD for a while. go with Seagate or another brand.

System:
Windows 2000Pro ServicePack4
Asus Granite Bay Deluxe mobo
512mb Corsair 3200xms LL (265x2)
80Gb WD Se (Primary Master)
160Gb WD SE (Primary Slave) Giving me problems now
Sony DVDRW (Secondary Master)
NEC DVD ROM (Secondary Slave)
160Gb WD Se (Primary Master on PCI ATA IDE Controller) BUSTED DRIVE.) (Can't back up normally so burn to DVDRW and from that back to HD's, burns also take about 6-12hrs because the BUSTED DRIVE hangs and doesn't transfer properly)

How do you turn cache write off?

I go to my drive right click Properties > Hardware > (pick my drive I want) > Properties > Disk Properties > Here I see Write cache enabled is greyed out. I can't select it so I assume it is off?

Thanks anyway.

I've had the same problem on different partitions on two Maxtor 160GB (8MB/7200RPM) hard drives on two different machines. Both drives were attached to a Promise TX133 IDE controller. I easily got rid of the "Delayed Write Failure" message by moving all of the information from those partitions on to another and formatting the affected partitions.

I see.

Thanks for the insight.

AT is great for info 😎

I don't have 160Gb worth of backup space though 🙁. I think I'll rma the 1st drive off. Wait a bit then RMA off the drive that is going whack on me now 🙁. Btw I just have one big partition of the 160Gb drive. I just use it to dump space.

Thanks again.

ttt

For someone with 'maybe' a cure like turning something off and it working?

A guy can try right? 😛 RMA stuff is a pain as I'd like to fully use it now.

Thanks.

You might be able to use IBM's FeatureTool utility, to disable the write and/or read-cache features of the HD in a persistant manner, apart from Windows.

There is also a seperately-downloadable tool available from MS to set the internal disk-cache policies for HDs, although I can't recall what it was named.
