This happens randomly but sometimes this machine (I have seen it on other T40s as well) will have a very slow responce time when typing. The rest of windows seems normal but it can be annoying at times. Has anyone ever heard of this?

It lasts for only a short time and then resumes normal type speed.
 
I used a T30 which the keyed sometimes just didn't work.
Never got it sorted, just had to keep rebooting.
 
I have seen this several times as we use that model quite a bit. Almost always it has been that the wireless card is active and searching for wireless networks every 3 seconds or so. Disable that and see if it clears up.
 
when it happens put your hand on the left of the machine towards the back.

does it feel like a volcano coming out?
