Have 4 computers hooked up to my home network. I am trying to make all the computers go on standby to save power and enable wake on lan to wake them back up when I need to access there HDD's from another computer. However when I click on My Networks I get a long delay with the flashlight icon searching for about 20 seconds or so. During this time opening the start task bars and such lag and freeze up for 10-15 seconds. Is there anyway to speed up the access times of computers coming out of standby?

I have the router in my basment, there is a switch in one room which connects two computers along with a print server and wireless access point to the router. There is another switch in my room which hooks up my computer, xbox and ps2 to the router and finally my sisters comp which gets a direct connection to the router. My sisters computer seems to be the only computer I can get almost instant access to the HDD after it comes out of standby. It is also the oldest computer, just a 650mhz athlon. Figures it works better then the others newer comps which are all less then a year old and have 1000mbs lan cards in them.

So any info would be great, I am out of my league here.

10-15 seconds for the PC to wake up, initialize network, and connect...that's not too bad.

There may be some technical ways around this, but there's really very little economy in the whole situation. A desktop box just sitting there doing nothing sucks up very little power. In fact, the constant spinning up and down of drives and power cycling of components may cost you more in wear and tear than you save on electricity. Turn off the monitors to save energy for sure, but suspending every desktop just isn't worth it. Especially since it's getting in the way of the network functioning properly...

Wake On Line and Standby are two different things Not related one to the other.

In Standby Mode the computer is On but the CPU, HDD, and Monitor go to Sleep.

WOL is a way to start a computer that is Off. I.e. when using WOL the computer has to boot.
