Delay the Playstation 3 til 2007?

This would give the 360 a two year lead, in which case, most people would get the 360 and then get the PS3 two years later.

That would be an interesting but ultimately futile strategy for Sony IMHO. $99 PS2s will not significantly eat away at the Xbox360; people will want the next-gen console, not the already obsolete one.

The only way this would work would be if ps3 were significantly better than xbox 360, it would have to be good enough to justify the purchase of another system 2 years later or warrant waiting, andpassing up the xbox 360. But hell by that point the 360 will probably be 100 or 150 bucks cheaper and if ps3 isn't much better than sony is screwed.

Wow, the Xbox 360 will make inroads even in Japan if Sony forces people to wait that long.

I read the article, the delay is only mentioned as an option if the 360 flops at launch so Sony could gain some cash from the profits of cheap to make PS2s. The analyst went on to say that if the 360 launches strong the PS3 will have to be pushed out ASAP.

I would have to disagree. The plan of selling PS2's at $99 is aimed towards parents who are cost concious, not technology consious. Like ever other industry, there are the few like some of us here who will go out and purchase the 360 no matter what. But if Sony starts advertising a PS2 at $99, all of these parents who have been holding out buying one for their kids because of the $149 price will now get one. They go to the store and see an XBOX360 that's $300, or the PS2 (which they've most likely heard of) for $99, which do you think they will buy? Especially if the 360 is in short supply, which is most always the case.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Nope, ms is discontinuing production of xbox to get them sold before the release of xbox 360. since xbox360 is backwards compatibile, having the xbox would be pointless.

Hm, and that should drive the price of used PS2s down to $50-70, at which point I might finally pick one up, now that there's scores of cheap used games available too 🙂
