I have windows XP Pro and whenever I boot my computer up and go to log on a desktop it takes forever. It starts to load windows fine and when you think its done (the little red little turns off) and you go to open something it doesn't respond. Then after about 2-3 mins the hard drive starts working and finishes loading. Its really annoying. This only happens after you boot the computer if you log off and log on again it boots normaly. No slowdown. I've tryed disabling programs but that doesn't fix it.

Someone please tell me what to do to get rid of this its driving me INSANE!

Does the same thing for me,...only not as long. I can wait that extra minute...but that's why I just leave my computer on. Give Bootvis a shot. It's a utility to optimize boot time. Most users have used this and have reported faster boot times. Hope this helps.

Did you install xp fresh or perform an upgrade from another O.S. ? That could be a problem if you upgraded.
Sounds like XP is hanging on a driver it doesn't particularly like. Have you checked all of your internal & external peripheral manufacturers for updated xp drivers?
Try booting xp in safe mode "F8" key on bootup. If Xp boots o.k. then it's probably a driver issue.
If you can't find any updated xp drivers, I would uninstall all un-necessary internal & external peripherals.
IE...leave in the video card, hard drive, keyboard, mouse, monitor, but disconnect everything else.
Boot again in safe mode, if it starts up o.k. then try booting normally without the un-necessary peripherals.
If it boots o.k. then add in the peripherals one at a time & see which one causes the problem.

Be aware that a multitude of problems can be caused by trying to upgrade an o.s. as opposed to a clean install. If all else fails, try re-installing from scratch.

Good luck

XP loves to regularly inspect all your drives for changes (cdrom and dvd drives slow down this process considerably). I had a similar issue when my raid array was corrupted. Have you tried scanning your disks for errors? Also, it's possible that the program responsible for detecting new Plug'n'Play devices is responsible for the hangup. Have you tried disabling that service? 2-3 minutes... sheesh... if it's truly an OS problem MS needs to correct it.

I also had somewhat of a "stall" on my XP Pro boot, I recently added a DVD and Burner to my system and had the CDRW on the same rounded IDE cable as my HD and the DVD on its own IDE cable.

I attached both the CDRW and DVD to the same IDE cable and put my Seagate 7200rpm drive on its own IDE cable as the only device. This actually cut my XP boot time in half, not 100% sure why but it worked for me.

DVD and CDRW are Lite-Ons

I have just been trouble shooting the same problem, check this:

Go to the services section (Control Panel->Admin tools->services)

After you boot up check to see if the service called Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) says 'starting' on it.

On my comp everytime I connected to the net something (never used to do this) starts the BITS service and sets it to 'auto' so it tries to start on every reboot. This causes problems as it cant seem to start on bootup. It would try to start for exactly 2 minutes after booting and then start and the system would spring to life.

You may also have an error in the event viewer saying the BITS service hung on starting.

Bump as I would like to see this resolved, everyone who has the 2 minute laggyness check your services as stated above. Also the network suggestion, I am not on a network btw.

Does anyone with the problem use Download Accelerator?

My suggestion above brought my 2 minute boot to less than 30 sec. I'm not on a network either (if was wasn't clear before). Try this. If it messes you up, then you can undo it by setting the options back to automatic.

I have since reinstalled, it was definitely the service causing the delay. It now stays on manual on a clean install.

I understand it may be what you said for some people but I would like to know if other people have problems with this service as I think it is a bug with either the OS or maybe a 3rd party app such as norton. The service causes an exact 2 minute delay as it tries to start. I'm still not sure which piece of software is responsible for changing it to start on boot.

i'd like to clear some doubts.

A) I did a clean install of XP, complete, fresh install, i always do this everytime.
B) I do not have dsl or cable modem or anyhthing, plain old dial up.
C)It did not always happen. It seemed to happen around the time I installed Norton AV 2002.

I have this problem as well. that delay. everything loads up after about 2 mins.

I really think we should try to focus on Norton AV 2002. Mr.White said this as well.

Admittedly, i have a cracked version. I believe at install it said that it was designed for win2k but i'm not sure. I'm going to try uninstalling it and then see what happens. The peculiar things i do see in task bar during the lag are:

NDETECT.EXE
about 5 servicehosts or something
Navap32W or whatever, the norton startup. Even though i disabled running norton on startup (thru norton's app), it still runs this file.

i'm pretty pissed off, i'll do some research on symantec's site.

I have this problem as well, I dont think it is relative to NAV 2002. When i originally tried to figure out the problem i thought it was because of NAV, I ended up doing a fresh install again and it still happened. It is annoying but i cant figure out the culprit. I'll be watching this thread with interest.

If i feel up to it, maybe i'll give what MrWhiteUK suggested.

I am on 56k also
