Hello,

I have a quick question about an issue that I'm not sure I can even describe correctly. After booting into Windows, I'm unable to do anything like launch the dialer for my DSL until about 30 seconds passes. Windows looks like it's finished booting, all the icons are in the bottom right that should be there, and there's no HDD activity, butI can't select an icon, run a program, etc. until a bit of time passes. Suddenly the HDD starts working again, the desktop icons filcker once, and I'm ready to go.Does anyone else have exerience with this happening? Thanks for any help!

Here's my HiJackThis log, btw, in case somethings up there..

What startup programs do you have?
You can check them by running msconfig. Go Start/Run and type msconfig. Then, click on "Startup".
All those programs start when windows starts and may delay things.
You can remove startup items if that is the problem. But, first, let's see if that is the problem!

Edit:
In the past, one could download bootvis from microsoft.
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/.../fastboot/bootvis.mspx
But, it seems they have stopped supporting it.
You can still download it from some other places on line.
This is an example.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=664
You don't have to use the optimize program, as Microsoft says that it is already a part of XP. But, you can use it to get a trace that shows what programs run at startup and how long each of them takes to start.

I have the following programs, if there'sa better way of letting you know about them than justlisting them, let me know:

CPQSET.exe
srmclean.exe
hptasks.exe /s
OneTouch.exe
SynTPLpr.exe
SynTPEnh.exe
DirectCD.exe

Got few disabled, more of those than what's enabled in fact. It's an HP notebook, btw.

It is not a good idea to use msconfig for permanently disabling startup programs. It is meant to be used for trouble shooting.

See if you can use bootvis to find out which one of the startup programs takes the lingest to start.
I added some info on bootvis to my previous post.

spoolsc\v.exe (1228) and explorer.exe (1156) are at the 17.xx second mark on the left side of a purple line, and cpqset.exe (1404), srmclean.exe (1416) and hptasks.exe(1424) along with onetouch.exe(1432) are on the right side.

What do the numbers and purple line indicate?

The vertical (Brown?) line represents when the boot is done. The horizonal axis is time.
If you hold the cursor on the line, it reads boot done in so many seconds.
What is the number?
The startup programs start after the boot is done.
On the process window, zoom out and find your startup programs. Which one is the last? Which one takes the longest to end?

Can you disable the DirectCD startup and see if windows starts faster?

Th eboot is finished in 19.12 seconds. The only other time I've seen this is on my PC (the one I'm having a problem with is a coworkers) after installing Norton AntiVirus. It would turn on fine but you'd be stuck looking at the desktop, unable to do anything, for about 20 seconds. I found that if I was connected to the internet while installing NAV this could be avoided. Almost like it tries the connection during the install and keeps trying every bootup if it's unable to connect during the install. My computer's very finely tuned (IMHO) and I'm able to start working literally 2 seconds or so after the desktop appears during bootup. He had NAV installed halfway or something, but I uninstalled it at his request because it was screwed up. The files associated with Norton are not installed and tunning according to HiJackThis or MSCONFIG, but the delay that (I guess at least) NAV causes is still there, if NAV was even the problem to start with. I know that after a fresh install of XP my computer was always fine until I put NAV on it, and after that it would act like this if I didn't install Norton 'correctly'.

Just a thought. This issue may be unresolvable without a format, but thanks for the help so far Navid!
