Do you have a good size chunk of users on your campus using AIM to chat to others? Of course you do! I?m sure that all the chatting is for educational purposes too or not.

Do you receive cute little forwards in your email? Of course you do and everyone else with an email account also receives these and they are of course non educational. Should you start blocking email? Of course not. It?s a great communication tool that is both education and non educational.

The point I?m trying to make is that you cannot accuse someone of using the network for non education purposes because every single user would be guilty. The internet has become very popular and a way of life.

I realize you are trying to block all the p2p and all the bad things the internet has evolved to but you need to do something about the speeds. I just ran this speed test here at <my school>:

«2367 down
«5358 up

The slowest network down speed I have seen at <my school> this year is 1000 and that is at peek times with loads from both the dorms and academic network.

I realize those are some very nice speeds but your service is no where close to that. You should be able to offer at least 512/128 at very bare minimum for the fees that students are charged ($700/semester, I would say at least $100 goes towards internet x 1000 students = $100,000/semester if not more.)

his school: ?We purchased a Quality of Service (QoS) system and installed it over spring break?

My brother says the speeds have improved some now. Isn?t the QoS just a band aid for what you have right now? In all seriousness what connection does the campus use? Can he expect to see some speed improvements?

With the internet becoming as popular as it is today you need to stop and really think about the speeds. It will most definitely affect student decisions on attending <his school>. I also see that a new residence hall is under construction. Won?t this slow the network down more or are you going to purchase more bandwidth or do whatever is necessary to improve the conditions? I?m expecting a response to this email. I already sent an email to the helpdesk yesterday but did not receive a response as of yet. I?m assuming you are backed up on emails containing complaints about the network speeds.

My brothers school snail mailed a letter of concern over this to the presidents office and then my boss at school got the letter. I now have a meeting Monday morning over this with him. The best download speed he has had is 300 down.

eh. it's campus broadband.

at my college, anyone who didn't like the speeds on the campus network was welcome to get cable internet setup and pay for it themselves.
 
When you put your title at the end of the email, you are representing your school.

You came off as a huge prick in that letter.

Can't handle it??!??! I am shocked and amazed at the stupidity of the OP. Go ahead and read the email you sent again. You sent this, as a professional person in a professional position, and did NOT expect any repercussions? How utterly ridiculous. People do NOT act that way in the "real working world". I suspect you will find that out the hard way on Monday.
 
It is only the Internet. As long as the pages load up in a timely manner it isn't so bad. He is there for an eduation and having a slightly slower net isn't too big of a deal imo unless he needs huge bandwidth for something.

I'm wondering why doesn't he complain about it himself and you complaining from your school about their school?
