One of the ways I've heard deja-vu can happen is when you are doing something that doesn't take much conscious effort (like driving) where you can sometimes jsut sorta even forget you are doing it, but your brain is still registering it, and then you are jolted out of it into a more alert state your brain has the memmories of the less alert state and the more alert state which are essentially the same now comming in and interprets the first one as a memmory and the second one as whats happening now which just happens to be very similar to the previous memmory which really is only what was happenign one second ago except you don't conciously remeber it.

WOW, thats the worst explanation ever. Lets try again. Ever had it when you were driving sorta toned out and then suddenly you see where you are and cannot even remember the past minutes or so of driving? Well, your brain still has those memmories somewhere and at the point where you make that realization you could have deja-vu because what is happening right now could remind you of what was happening 5 seconds ago except that you don't even consciously remember what was happenign 5 seconds ago, so you think it was much longer ago.
