Considering buying a deisel. Currently deisel is going for 2.17 in NJ and regular 2.21. How much of an increase in mpg is typical for deisel? Any repair issues for new vehicle? Looking at the Audi Q7 TDI 4.2.

As a general rule, diesel is approximately 30-35% more efficient than a similarly sized gas engine. Theoretically, as long as the price of diesel is less than 35% higher than gas, you'll come out ahead, but do the math. Compare the real life MPG for both the 3.6 and the 4.2 gas engines available in the Q7 with the MPG of the TDI, while factoring in any possible cost difference in the fuels.

Still better than the 13/18 for the 4.2 gas or 14/20 for the 3.6 gas, which is typical for these SUV's

Also, take a look at how much extra you have to spend to get the diesel vehicle. It looks like its a $4,000 jump from the gas 3.6 to the diesel engine. If you assume the price of gas and diesel are the same (not really accurate, diesel has typically been a bit pricier in recent history, barring the last month or so) and look at the combined EPA MPG rating for both vehicles you can estimate how far you'd have to drive to break even. The combined EPA rating that I've seen for the diesel is 20 (got it from autoblog) and the 3.6 gas engine is 16 (from the EPA's website, couldn't find the diesel listed on that site). With a fuel cost of $2.50 per gallon for both gas and diesel it would take 128,000 miles to recover that extra $4,000. However, if there are extra maintenance costs for the diesel that could easily make it impossible to recover that extra money that you spent.

My parents have the 3.6 and when I drove it it got 16 city, 22 highway(and that's not babying the throttle), that's 19 combined , TDI 4.2 is 2 more mpg but might be more when driven. You also need to factor in car cost, repair, how much savings Diesel vs Premium.

Also I cant seem to find the 4.2 TDI on audi's site they only have the 3.0.

You must been living in a cave somewhere. New deisel car like the BMW 335d I just ordered 😀 has 20% LESS CO2 emission than the 335i(gas).

But yeah, torque is the reason I got it 🙂

eww the Q7 wagon... if you get a diesel, get the X5 3.5d. Twin turbo diesel with MASSIVE torque and gets 22mpg as per real world reports. It's also only slightly slower than a 4.8. I would've jumped on this thing like flies on shit if it had been released sooner. The handling is also unmatched. I didn't drive the Q7 but did the Q5 recently... its body roll is pretty poor and that's a small version. The only reason to get a Q7 otherwise would be a better 3rd row or if you like a better computer in MMI (latest idrive in the X coming in the fall has closed this gap). BMW has the 4-year bumper to bumper which includes annual maintenance - that's a lot of money for a new car in its first years you'd have to pay for at Audi.

BTW, at current prices of $0.50 cheaper diesel, the diesel savings over premium gas is ~$70/mo @ 12k mi./yr.

I would get a Jetta TDI if anything...they can get 50~ MPG or so.

If I remember, last year it was pretty weird, where diesel was a lot more then unleaded

I thought about this myself, but passed. When you get it, be sure to make a thread about it.

I recently wrecked my 1995 F250 4X4 7.3L diesel. It got 17 MPG
I replaced it with a 2002 F150 4X4 with a gas, 5.4L. It gets 13 MPG.
