I have a 4-computer home network which shares one DSL line with AnalogX Proxy. All machines are running Win98 SE. Two of the machines use Linksys NICs, which came in a kit with the 4-port hub. For the most part, dslreports.com speed test results from both the host and remote machines are consistent with other PacBell users.
The host is a low end, "bare bones" system with a Celeron 300A and 128MB ram, the Kensington NIC provided with the DSL modem (seems to work fine), and a generic onboard NIC for the network (which also holds its own).
For my computer (PIII 450, 128 MB Ram, V3-5k AGP video, AOpen AX6B mobo and RAMpage to maximize memory efficiency), I cheaped out and used a generic NIC with a Realtek chipset. After several hours of heavy internet usage, my connection appears to slow down, and it becomes difficult/impossible to obtain things like socks4 and secure connections with any efficiency. Non-internet applications seem to function fine, and simple browsing is okay. If I shut down this machine and let it sit for a while (15 - 30 minutes), it seems to come back to life without any difficulties.
As this does not appear to be an issue on any of the other machines on the network (including the host), I am assuming this to be something on my machine, and possibly the NIC. The host mobo only has one expansion slot, which is taken by the modem's NIC, so there is little that can do there.
