Anyone ever done this using a degaussing coil?

Know where I can borrow or rent one?

I just got turned onto a nice TV set for free! :)

Problem is it's got one'o those rainbows across the top of the screen. :(
I would imagine degaussing would get rid of it. :)

Would a TV repair place clear this up for me, and if so, what do you suppose they would charge?

TV repair place should be able to do it. Sometimes you can take a magnet and "work" out the colors yourself. Just be careful not to get it too close or make the problem worse.

Radio Shack used to sell plug-in wands pretty cheap, you might check the online catalog.

A repair visit would likely cost $50-100 (guess) but if there is a mom-n-pop appliance repair store near you it might be less or they might loan you a coil / wand for $x and a security deposit.
