Defragmenting Mac OS X

I'm trying to install Windows 7 using the Boot Camp Assistant. But it always says that some files cannot be moved and that I should reinstall OS X. Obviously I would like not to have to do that. Any ideas how I can defragment it so I can install Windows 7 on here?

You can use carbon copy cloner to copy the drive to a USB drive, then copy it back.

It isn't so much file fragmented (which doesn't happen nearly as much in OS X) as it is drive fragmented. The unfragmented files are spread across the entire drive.

What you are looking for is, as sourceninja suggested CCC to copy back and forth, or you can get something to 'optimize' the disk, which is where it moves all the largest files together.

i usually use drive genius to defragment. works great!

I just have to say that DriveGenius 2 isn't fool proof, or at least wasn't for me. It completely hosed my OS X install. Luckily I had a backup, but very unsettling.

TechTool Pro 5 has a file optimization tool where it will defragment files. I believe the most I've ever come across is about 15 and it doesn't take nearly as long as it does on Windows.

There is also a Volume Optimization tool where it compacts all files to one area on the drive. This sounds like exactly what you need.

I use TechTool Pro 5 at work and it is also bootable.

you can get iDefrag to defrag your drive. I use both iDefrag & iPartition on my MBP.
