Defragmenting Daily

I am running win2k, and whenever I run the defrag utility(which is almost daily) It tells me that I should degfrag. Is this normal?

depends... do u install / download/ erase a lot? if u do well yea... like everything u collect on the internet, well it caches it and if u erase the cache it leaves your hard drive pretty well fragmented.

Do you have indexing/journaling or whatever they call it these days enabled? With it and NTFS, I can easily go 3 months on a primary drive and 1 year on a storage.

TUNA ...I hear what your saying... But I have been defraging my Fax Server with a Quantum Fireball HD 6.4gb for 2 years now..
without one problem ..... ' I just wish modern drives would stay together as my Quantum has...)🙁

Yea...defragging that much will destroy your hard drive. So much strain during defrags.

People think defrags are the end-all be-all of system tuning. They're really not that great. Once a month would be fine.

3 times a day?! why!? besides wasting time, your making your HD do extra work for negligible performance upgrade. once or twice a month is enough.

i defrag once every 6-10 days...this should be ok i think...

I also defrag everyday & never had a problem.Do it once a day & it takes minutes,do it every months & it takes much longer.

Well... I use morpheus and edonky2000 everyday, so yes, I use alot of file sharing apps. What kind of preformance hit will I see if i enable indexing?

Here's an idea for you obsessed defraggers (no, it's not Defraggers Anonymous...):

I defrag about once a month and it takes about 15 minutes on my 5 partition's of 60 gigs total.

I'm too worried that 8 hours of constant reading and writing will kill my hard disk.

after 1 month it still says drive is only less than 5-10% fragmented..

I usually defrag every month or so...

Maybe you should get Norton speed disk in the Norton utilities pack! That is much more thorough than Defrag!
