Hi, I recently did a decompression of some files in my computer. And now, I'm left with files ranging from half a gig to over 2 gigs with over 5000 fragments. I've tried using the defragmenter through the command prompt using -v -w and still nothing. I've tried third party defragmenters like auslogics and defraggler and they still dont work. When using auslogics though, I had some light shine on me while searching their support site.

"Disk Defrag sometimes skips certain files because they are locked by another running program... Disk Defrag also needs a contiguous disk space for each file to be defragmented. If your disk has a lot of free space, but it is broken into small free space intervals, Disk Defrag is unable to defragment some of the large files (such as movies, etc.) To tackle this problem we intend to introduce free space consolidation in the next version of the program. "

So now that I think I've found the source of my issue; could someone reccomend me a defragmenter that has what Auslogics calls "free space consolidation?"

thanks

How much free space is there on the HD or partition? If a running program is causing the problem, defrag in Safe Mode (the best way anyway).

Thanks for the help. In the end, I tried JKdefrag. Great little defragmenter. It can even sort files on your HDD. It defragmented those large files and also made some large contiguous space.

law9933: I'm sorry I didnt state the amount of free space in my first post. I was meaning to do so all along while I was typing it; I it just flew over my head in the end. :p I understand it really would've helped if the issue was that I didnt have enough space to defrag those files.

scott:Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, 5000 fragments on files that big are obviously causing me issues. Games stutter like hell.

Nothinman: Yes it is causing me issues, otherwise I wouldnt request help. Having files of over 500mb with over 5k fragments would obviously tend to cause issues.
