Defragment Troubles in Windows ME

For some odd reason, the defragment tool doesn't work under my computer in Windows ME. I can click defragment, but the progress bar only stays at 0% and never seems to do anything and eventually closes (as if it were done). I don't think that it's actually doing anything, and Windows can't determine when the last time that it was done actually is. I have it set to automatically defragment twice/week, but it's not doing that. Any ideas that I could try? Thanks...

EDIT: I click on "Show Details" as well, and nothing is actually being done, proving my theory. Any help would be appreciated...

That's exactly what I'm doing... I can see the hard drive status "busy" light's on and I can hear that it seems to be defragmenting, it's just not actually accomplishing anything as far as I can tell.

Some of your programs are running and preventing the defragment program from properly starting................ you must find whatever is running in the background and disable it ......................... then start the defrag utility.

Perhaps you have to run scandisk first. You can't defragment if there are any errors on the drive. A background proggie is another possible culprit as some others have already said.
