Defraging your computer with the slow @$$ system defragger. INFO PLEASE!!

I run defragger with the system defragger. Takes about 5-6 hours cause its slow as hell. Is there any better program that is free with no trial based isue? I have VOPT ME v6.0 but im down to my last 6 days to use it. Runs great but i dont have the extra money to buy the $40 sob. Any info would be appreciated

Try running defrag in safe mode you may have too many programs running in the back ground.

alright ill try that...i usually leave my comp on at night to let it defrag...heh takes forever..but needs to be done

EDIT-Also any other info on free, no trial, no demo defraggers or if its a trial and you can get me a crack

Get rid of any programs that is not essential. Be strict about it. It might be taking 3-5 hours because it is constantly being restarted (when interrupted by other progs) These are not limited to visible programs.. 'End Task' to all behind-the-scene ones.. except for vital ones that are needed to run the OS itself.

My Athlon 750Mhz w/320sdram defrags my 40gig Maxtor 7200rpm in 30-40 mins.. very nice

Also, Scandisk first before Defragging.. it's also to good to reboot just for defragging, thus freeing up resources

PS- default defragger in Windows gets the job done.. I don't understand people who defrag with other utilities..

norton disk doctor and/or norton utilities can do it a helluva lot faster than windows can, but you need to close everything... if anything tries to access the disk while it's on it will restart...

wait a min.. Norton Utilities?? I hate those *system optimizing* programs..

Most features are junk and u can tweak so much better though other ways (regedit, msconfig, HDvalet, Regcleaner, Regclean etc..)

IMO Norton stuff are bloatware.. maybe except for anti virus

hmmm, umm this isn't a system optimizer, it FIXES hd's... brought my dead maxtor back to life becuase it can fix permantly damaged sectors... by the way how can you comment if you have not used it. You want your hd to be better/faster - use norton.

When you first start the defragger in Win9x, click on 'Settings...' and uncheck 'Rearrange program files so my programs start faster' and this should cut down on the defragging time. Using these options, it takes about 20mins to defrag my 45Gig HD (about 50% used space).

I just had to use the quote feature, because I never did. I think norton antivirus is bloated. Most norton stuff are, but like only use what you have to. Dont make it start up. Just use speeddisk and all.

(1) Get Norton Speeddisk or Diskkeeper which allow you to schedule the defrag at non-usage hours.

(2) Excessive defrag time may be a result of poor disk organization. If you put the OS files, programs in the same partition as your data files, it is guarrantee long defrag time. Make separate partitions for OS, major programs and data. Neither the OS nor the programs partition will need frequent defrag. The data partition is likely to contain mostly smaller files that are re-written often. It takes a lot less time to defrag the data disk.

(3) Create a separate partition for the page files if possible.

i've noticed that w/ win2k, defrag is about 234234^10 times faster...on both FAT32 and NTFS partitions...

Norton can be okay, but if you load all that crap on your system it will bog it way down. And STAY away from crashguard.

I have never seen it stop a crash in a way that it itself did not crash. But I HAVE seen people do a tapeback up a drive with crashguard only to find crashguard made the backup unusable.
