Defraging the hard drive

For some reason this week the windows 98 defrager doesn't want to work. It keeps resetting itself after a few minutes and continues where it left off. I've tried everything I can think of and besides from formating the hard drive, does anyone know of another defraging program? Thx

Get Norton SystemWorks 2001. It has a defragging program called Norton SpeeDisk, excellent programs, it can arrange your swapfiles, frequently used files, and more.
Go get it, it has all you need to maintain your PC:Antivirus,Utilities, etc.

Your problem most likely stems from a proces that runs in the background periodically. When the process runs, it changes the contents of the drive, and the defrag program detects the changes and restarts the defragging process. While I agree with the previous posters on using speed disk, if you are satisified with the built-in defragger, why spend the money if it is not needed. Look for any unessential processes that may be running, and kill them. And try running the defrag utility, it just may solve your problem.

I agree with XP get norton systemworks 2001 you will love it plus speed disk is supper fast I have a 30gig harddrive and it defrags in under 5 minutes.

I didn't have any processes going. What ended up being the problem is I have bad sectors at the end of my drive so I just made a new partition and cut out 150mb of the end of the drive so the bad sectors aren't used and mess everything up.
