Here's a list of some cleaning tools I find useful:

registry cleaning = Registry First Aid www.rosecitysoftware.com (not free)

defrag = voptXP www.goldenbow.com/ (not free)

Lavasoft Ad-Aware PLus = removes spywear (donation expected)

Install a Hosts file to shield against future spywear = www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm (free)
Don't worry about editing the Hosts file. Just download the new one about every 2 weeks. No more spybots!

Install the 2 simple utilities to both Lock and Unlock the Hosts file so no spywear can secretly alter it = http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsfaq.htm#Locking (free)

In addition to Windows Disk Cleanup I also use McAfee Quick Clean Lite, but Windows Disk Cleanup is pretty much o.k.

Check for updates to all application programs, and to bios, and to video card, other cards.

Hope some of these ideas are useful to you! They work real well for me.

Anybody had any problems with these registry cleaners? Do they actually speed things up?

Another vote for CCleaner, I use it 4-5 times a day.
Of course it pays to actually look at what it wil clean, to be positive you want certain files/entries removed, before you run it. It has a very detailed list: AV Logs, temp files, cookies, etc. If your PC failed to boot after using it, evidently, you didn't take the time to see what was gonna be removed.

Also, RegSeeker (freeware) litle more in depth than CC. And creates backups before any removal, (check appropriate box, of course).

Please would the people without knowledge just STFU instead of posting their opinion on a PC forum ? :) Sorry...

As for this topic...i really, really wanted to write a new Guide regarding performance maintenance and and keeping PCs in shape and running fast.

Anyway i never found the time, but here's my input regarding your questions:

() Defragging
Use either PerfectDisk or Diskeeper. I tend towards PerfectDisk which is very good but right now i am evaluating Diskeeper 10 and will see in a few days what it new i-faast method does.

() REGISTRY DEFRAGGING, CLEANING.

Yes - it's NOT a myth and i might have NOT tried all available tools out there, but i can only HIGHLY (in general) recommend "jv16 powertools" which has a registry-cleaner option amongst a lot of other features.

You can also try regsupreme pro (from the same company) which (IMHO) is a standalone registry cleaner.

The point is that i also tried OTHER "so called" registry cleaners and had BAD experiences with them - up to the point of destroying a working system.

I never had ANY problems with jv16 tools/regsupreme pro, and i have to admit i dont even do backups when i clean my registry :)

---> NOW - you cleaned out countless entries in the registry and now you could also DEFRAG the registry (because otherwise the 'space' in the registry stays empty even after you cleaned it and the registry itself wouldn't 'shrink')

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO with a file-defrag (defragging the FILES)...i am talking about a real registry-defrag and actually a lot of people always confuse this and dont even know what it is.

There is one GREAT tool out which is called

NGREGOPT

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

That guy also has a great registry-backup utility (ERUNT).....i consider those two together with jv16 powertools a MUST have set of tools !

Run ngregopt and optimize your registry.

Hope i helped somehow :)
