I have this question too. I'll be using it for 98SE and 2KPro.
I believe the defragmenters that come with 2K and XP don't defrag the file table or whatever it's called for NTFS partitions, and it can get really fragmented.
Am currently running both Diskeeper 7.0 and PerfectDisk2000 ver. 5.0 for 30 days. You can try both for free and decide. So far, PD2000 is a clear winner in terms of speed and drive optimization - not just defragging. It handles and defrags the MTF very well.
As for frequency of defragging/optimization - it doesn't hurt your HDD at all. I do it daily and have done so for over 10 years. It depends on usage. A network server needs much more frequent defragging than does a single home user system.
