Defrag with RAID?

How does defrag work with multiple hard drives. I just put 2 40GB W-D on a Gigabyte GA-7XR (RAID) with a XP 1800+ proc and XP o/s. If I activate defrag, the box just locks while compressing files at 1%. I'm new to RAID and this is one more peculiarity of an otherwise awesome system. Then I'm thinking that maybe you can't defrag a multiple drive setup. 😱 Somebody put me outta my misery here. (yes, I downloaded all latest drivers and critical updates) Thanks
 
are you sure its locking up? XP defrag takes a good while to perform, especailly the first time and it seems like it compresses at the 1 percent for a long time before it actually starts defragging, and could possibly be even longer on a large raid array.
 
Try leaving it run over night. The built in defrag is as slow as malasses in a deep freeze. (It's Diskeeper).
