defrag pattern differences- maxtor and ibm

don't know what to make of it, but i noticed that whenever i defrag my maxtor hdd i get a horizontal laminar pattern on the defrag screen just as it's beginning to defrag, but when i defrag my deskstar the pattern looks like vertical stripes. can anybody tell me why the difference between the two? setups are the same, just different hd drives.
