Define "alcoholic"

Getting plastered more than 3 times in one week.
Or drinking between 6:00 am and 2:00 pm.
IMHO.

Alcoholic is not an opinion. There is a definition for the word. However if you want my "view" on that... someone who feels the need to drink constantly or very frequently and cannot be happy without it, ie... uses it as a means of escape from reality or "because they're depressed", would constitute being an alcoholic.

Re: zCypher

Dictionary.com says it's: A person who drinks alcoholic substances habitually and to excess or who suffers from alcoholism.

"Habitually" and "to excess" are matters of opinion. Look them up in the dictionary... they don't specify numbers.

Also, I like how you put my answer down, then turn around and present yours the exact same way.

Pretty crappy definition. Perhaps it would be appropriate to add the definition for the bolded word above?

A disorder characterized by the excessive consumption of and dependence on alcoholic beverages, leading to physical and psychological harm and impaired social and vocational functioning. Also called alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence.

i've heard that if you drink alone on a regular basis (to the point where you are at least slightly inebriated) you are an alcoholic.

Somebody who drinks every day...that's my personal criteria..

Studies have shown (in men anyway) that men who have a drink or two a day live longer than men that don't drink at all. Red wines and dark beers are actually somewhat beneficial to your health when consumed moderately.

As for my definition of what makes an alcoholic - my definition of one is somebody that does not have control of their drinking. It's not a frequency thing. Having one drink a day isn't bad at all, and like I mentioned earlier, probably better for you than not having a drink at all.

It's when you go out to a bar, or out to a party and you consistently just get rip roaring drunk every time...even though you say you don't plan to...that's where alcoholism starts IMHO.

Somebody who drinks alcohol heavily for other reasons rather than social.

There are plenty of social alcoholics.

I think that term is contradictory. If you only drink in social settings, I wouldn't consider someone an alcoholic.
