I just tried the demo the other day and didn't like it. However, I only played the first two levels, so it's not a very complete review. The fact that you can only place towers at certain spots seems to take too much of the strategy of designing your tower layout out of tower defense.
It looks great, but just like a book, if a game doesn't intrigue me right away, I don't give it much of a chance.
Well, most tower defense games only let you build in a grid or on special squares.
With games like Vector TD its a lot of potential squares so you dont notice much.
If you are talking about a Desktop TD type game where you put them all over the place and leave a tiny little alley for the baddies to navigate through: There are a few levels in the game like that. Not many.
They're just big and open and have a crapload of blank squares and a straight shot to the ending (if you dont set up a path they will be in & out quickly).
You could actually put up a solid wall of towers but then the baddies are allowed to push right through the force-fields. Better to set up a maze. Also, someone on the official game forums noticed that its possible to make a long row, box the enemy in, make them run to the end, delete a tower at the back, and they will run back to it looking for the opening.
If you keep doing it you can make them run back and forth until they die. The problem with this is you lose a little money when you buy and sell. And the interest isnt enough to make up for it. Better to use this technique on bosses where you get 400 credits per kill and they are worth the extra attention.
You have to get up to level 6 or 7 before you see those kinds of maps.
